A new spin-off band of The moon Knights has gone public just a few hours ago with a new song for download. The Keep Sweets is Lester's new band (I think it's just him; confirmation needed) and The MySpace page says it sounds like "a faggier version of clap your hands say yeah". For now I think that is pretty apt description, meaning this music rules. Go get it now!

For trivia purposes here is a list of all past and present moon knights spin-offs:

The Moon Knights- Lester, Julie, Ted, Adrian (reserve and past members: Dan, Jeff, Sam, Tad, Anna)
Leprechaun House Society- Lester, Anna(?)
The Yellow Circles- Ray, Kate
The Sourdoughs- Lester
Sultans of Rock- Dan, Lester
Secret Santa- Dan, Lester
Black Bolt & the Inhumans- MC Doug, Adrian, Ted, Julie, The Blue Wasp
Bees, inc.- The Blue Wasp
Oprah's Gay Nightmare- Ted
DJ.SNESDS- Adrian, Julie
The Wolfblitzer- Omega, Alpha, Alpha (reserve drummers: Alpha, Alpha, Alpha)
!*!SHADOW!*!DIPPER!*!- Grifter, Grifter, Grifter
!^!ANTI!^!SHADOW!^!DIPPER!^!- The World Mind
The Keep Sweets- Lester

hahahaha... that's almost ridiculous. As far as I know 8 of those 14 have performed live, and only one of those was ever cursed off the stage (!*!SHADOW!*!DIPPER!*!). Did I forget any?

SO... Briefly, this is about a regular kid in the real world who decides he wants to be a super-hero. This book is amazing. The story is great and the main character is one I can relate to in exacting terms. JR Jr is the best artist in all comics when it comes to storytelling and his pencils in this book are perfect for bringing an insane kineticism, without which this story would fall. It gave me the same rush as reading Rick Spears and Rob G's Teenagers form Mars and Dave Gibbons' The Originals. The difference is this is just better.

I was on the razor's edge of being this stupid in high school. Like the protagonist, I think a lot of my child hood was spent "feeling numb and playing video games" (or finding other suitable distractions). He is an only child of a widowed father where as I was an only child of divorced parents. I was constantly alone as they had to work constantly and I was left with more than enough time to develop "the perfect combination of loneliness and despair" that drives this story. I can't wait for more.

Elephantmen: War Toys 2 came out and that was really good. I read once (maybe in Understanding Comics?) that European comics focused on world building significantly more than American or Japanese counterparts. I feel that sense of world building in a big way with all of the Elephantmen books, and this miniseries is a great example of that. We have seen this future world Richard Starkings' design from so many points of view that it really comes alive. I love all of the work done in these books.

The new issue of Morrison's Batman continued what is a solid run for the character. This issue would be great if realized by a better artist. Tony Daniels' style is a little to traditional to allow this arc (which features hallucinations as a heavy part of the narrative) really take off. Yay for more Bat-Mite!

Young Avengers Presents 2 (featuring Hulkling) was probably just OK. I guess I really wanted this series of one shots to somehow advance a plot or something. Instead we get introspective character moments that could be accomplished in the space of a few pages, or even panels. It also frustrates me that Jim Cheung seems to be doing nothing but covers when he is a really great artist.

To briefly self promote, I am going to be doing a show with my wife as DJ SNESDS next Wednesday. This is sort of a transitional EP, 7 tracks in length. Moving from the less overt The Sex is Next to masterwork of After the Rain my Heart Still Dreams, i am become ass is the chrysalis stage of the Ahab butterfly.

The Tracks:

1. Your Body is a Wonderland- This cover is a poppy string of almost childish synth lines and electronic beeps. Julie (my wife) hates the original and this version is pretty funny.
2. I Can't Believe It's Not Booty (Radio edit)- The idea that this song would ever be played on radio is hilarious. Check out the single version on the 2nd video in my Valentine's Day post. This version replaces all the F-bombs with the word Love. The keys are also more lo-fi and the secondary keyboard part is much more pronounced. This track is completely great.
3. Sk8er Boi- Before there was Girlfriend their was that other amazing Avril song. This cover could be some terrible serious attempt to make this song techno workout/dance music. This song starts to show Captain Ahab's ability to walk the line of irony so silently that the casual passerby might not notice it.
4. This Music Sucks- A song that rips on its own genre for almost 5 minutes. The drum & bass brakes down in the middle for a noise & vocals tirade. Brilliant.
5. Climate Control Abe Lincoln vs. Fairy Princess Ballerina Bride (Live)- An electronic instrumental with "announcing" of what sounds like a pro wrestling match, this is a song that seems to be almost 100% based on being there. Why does this work for me? It's a horror trick, that what you don't see can be scarier than what you do see. Same deal here, with funnier being the operative word.
6. Goliath!- This is a narrative about David and Goliath mostly sung from Goliath's point of view. This reminds me of old comic books or Saturday cartoons where the bad guy constantly brags of their own evil. Goliath boasts about being a "befouler of the land" and a "metaphor of selfishness" and "proud to be uncircumcised"; while the Philistines refer to themselves as godless. Good stuff.
7. The Captain Ahab Megalomaniamix- This is probably my favorite track. It's an almost 16 minute mix that highlights past achievements and alludes to what would be their very bright future.

I am now eagerly awaiting the first package from the fan club that should come out soon. Of course, I can't wait for their next full length The End of Irony.

I was going to review the latest Incredible Hercules but its been out for a week now so I'm just going to link to this post (and this one and this one) that sums up everything I wanted to say and has prettier scans. If you've wondered why I have links to fashion blogs on my page here, i think this should clarify. Modern "high fashion" consists mostly of costumes. Inspiration for this line seems to have come from the Adam West Batman series of yore.

The new heroclix set, Crisis, comes out today!

#1 want: Klarion!

Also coming out that I'm getting: Batman, Elephantmen: War Toys 2, Kick-Ass and Young Avengers Presents 2. War Toys is an awesome mini series within Elephantmen, which is an awesome on-going series in support of the amazing mini-series Hip Flask. This preview is non-spoilery and War Toys #1 would be a nice introduction into the world. Hip Flask and Elephantmen are virtually indispensable reading and each issue includes so many articles, sketches and extras its almost a magazine.

Tomorrow: real post!

Nihilism, Masochism, Cajun

No time to post today so you get GAMBIT!!!!!!!

Let's be clear. I like this remix a lot. "Head Spins" is a great song that makes me want to dance and bob my head. The remix, "Head Spinz", makes me want to do a different dance and bob my head faster.

Also, Eating Disorder is looking for a title for her Summer release. Send her your ideas. While you are there you should take a while to look around and be creeped out. Eating Disorder is a musician whom you really want to be friends with on MySpace. It's a lot like how you should be Warren Ellis' friend. The bulletins are frequent and crazy. She also has free downloads.

So on to "The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln" by Scott McCloud, of Understanding Comics fame. I really like this book.

As you can see, I got a deal-and-a-half. I never even knew about this book until I found it for 99 cents in a discount bin in Fairbanks. Here is an excerpt from McCloud's description:

I like to think of The New Adventures of Abraham Lincoln as a "noble failure." The consensus of comics fans at the time seemed to be that "failure" was description enough.

McCloud blends CGI backgrounds with very cartoony and characters. The result is... a little... is painful the right word? The upside is that the art and storytelling are very clear and the pacing serves the story well. The story itself is actually pretty brilliant, and I think probably increasingly relevant in modern America. Young student Byron Johnson is a young black kid, frustrated with the vacant people around him. Here is Byron's reply to his teacher's question of what "Four score and seven years ago," means to him.

Ouch! Things look up when "Honest Abe" busts in to detention hall!

YEAH! Now that's executive action! The reader comes to realize that something is not quite right with ol' Abe when he acts like a complete idiot and cranks out the charm. Byron and his friend-who-wants-to-be-his-girlfriend Marcie have to expose the fraud before things get really out of hand, but what can two kids do against the charm of an American icon ressurected?

Enter: ABRAHAM LINCOLN!?!?!?!

That's right the real Abraham Lincoln is back too! Now they just have to figure a way to prove this all to human man is more real than the guy that looks like the face on the $5 bill. The story has action, excitement, and I seriously cry every time I read the ending. Symbols are powerful, scary things. From the real Lincoln:

SYMBOLS, America, can be useful tools. But beware of those who would have you used by them! Some of their symbols are pictures, some are familiar phrases, some are mere gestures. They are all designed to steal your hearts, America, but care little for your minds. It is your duty to assign both organs to attend them!

Heck yeah! This book serves up plenty of thrills, but maybe more importantly humanizes Lincoln in a way that nothing else I have encountered does.

Happy President's Day. It is a book of vignettes of a bunch of the teen titans as kids in elementary school. It's no Mini Marvels, but what is? My favorite Tiny Titan??

Ravager

Now, I'm not really any kind of fan of her mainstream counterpart, but "Rose" is great with the baby blue eye patch. Her shtick so far is embarrassment, as she is the daughter of new principal Deathstroke.

My favorite story was this 2-pager

GOLD! The classic 60s Titans are my favorites, and they are well represented here. Anyway, this is a cute comic, well worth $2.25, and I'll keep picking it up.

I subscribe to a few "Song-of-the-day" podcasts and MPR's "The Current Song of the Day" has consistently been the least exciting. Nevertheless, today's offering I liked. From Minneapolis band Skoal Kodiak, "Harpie" has a good, head bobbing groove, based on a constantly modulating distorted bass (or synth?) line. The vocals are so distorted they offer no discernible lyrics. The effect is kind of like one of the funkier Bjork tracks you might hear.

FRIDAY!

Happy V-Day!!! So take a trip with me to the land of love.

Our first stop is Captain Ahab's "U Want Me" video. Now, I'm sure many of you are already familiar, but indulge yourself and watch this again. Watch it all the way through. It will set the tone for this blog, the rest of the day, and maybe even change your life. The Mental Organism has had many a dealings with the opposite sex but here are my picks for the three most titilating adventures.

Last year, we learned of MODOK's, or rather George Tarleton's, fling with Monica Rappaccini in MODOKs 11 and the Ms Marvel story arc "Ready, AIM, Fire!" MODOK was once a normally proprtioned, scientist-dork who took advantage of a drunk girl at an AIM gathering. When years later, they have a chance to reunite, Monica spurns the freakish MODOK and condemns their offspring-producing encounter to a mistake. What she didn't realize is that Hell hath no fury like a MODOK scorned. He formulates an insane plan to get back at her by blowing her up with a destabilized Hypernova. She should really have thought about her hurtful and unkind words before she crossed poor MODOK.

Next on our stroll down MODOK memory lane is 1983's The Incredible Hulk 290: "Unholy Alliance". First off, it's refreshing to see how far we've come in 25 years. To call something as beautiful as love "unholy" truly is. MODOK's Conquest in this issue is Dr. Katherine Waynesboro. Now it's hard to tell by Sal Buscema's fairly flat art, but the Dr. is quite the looker. To summarize the plot, AIM kidnaps Dr. K.W. and turns her into Ms MODOK in order combat MODOK who is looking to reclaim AIM for himself.

What AIM didn't see coming was love.

And I don't think anyone saw the consummation coming.

Yikes! Click on that one for the full effect. Well, eventually MODOK disintegrates the Abomination and Ms MODOK is put off. MODOK tries to kill her, but accidentally knocks her into the machine that can revert her to her natural form. Dang!

6 years before this tragedy MODOK had an "encounter" with Ms Marvel in the 7th issue of her first series. Now if you read about their battle in 2007 you will have noticed she never mentions this battle. Here is why:

Oh yeah. Check that out! “She screams a second time, and inside her mind smiles… For MODOK has changed. No longer repulsive, fearful, monstrously evil– the mind ripper mas made him tall and strong and beautiful. It’s made him a man Ms Marvel can LOVE. And serve. A man she will worship as a GOD.” ICE COLD.

I think that image properly sets the tone for this last video. Download it from his blog at the HAWNAY TROOF MySpace page in the Blog section. I'm not sure if you need to be on MySpace to download it, but it is totally worth it. The wiki page is really informative if you want to know what it is. 8 Diagrams showcases a Clan short one member (the 9th being Ol' Dirty Bastard, died 2004) with a surprising maturity. The idea of a more mature Wu-Tang Clan is a paradox to say the least, but it comes across amazingly well. Experimentation is what broke Wu-Tang onto the scene in 1993 and the experiment continues stronger than ever. This has of course become a point of contention amongst fans, some who favor the "classic" Wu sound. I couldn't care less. RZA's productions on this album are at least on par with his best work. There is the much touted "The Heart Gently Weeps" featuring a slew of guests including live instruments, but "Rushing Elephants" offers a disconcerting loop that shifts pitch and tempo in startling ways, and is probably the most exciting track, musically. One criticism of this album is the over use of sung choruses. This one I can see, but overall the production is striking.

The 8 surviving Clan members all contribute strong lyrics, with some contributions from other Wu Family members. Most immediately interesting to me is RZA contributing lyrically more than on any prior Wu albums. RZA's voice is one of the most distinct in Hip Hop and his rhymes are completely unorthodox. He has the only solo track of the record, "Sunlight" which is a haunting state-of-the-world address as well as a tribute to Allah. Eerie and slow this track is a stand out. "The Heart Gently Weeps" features Ghostface Killa at the top of his game, spitting a verse with story telling that is rarely matched. Detail after detail, built into a rhyme structure that is unpredictable but constantly on point. Ghost's storytelling blends with a bit of singing, which as far as i know is a first for him. Method Man delivers without falling into all the cliches he has made into a solo career. No member really disappoints, with the possible exception of Ghost who fails to produce a verse for the tribute to ODB, "Life Changes." The level of emotion the other MCs display here is rare for any music, but especially for Hip Hop. Other stand out tracks are "Campfire", "Unpredictable", "Wolves", "Weak Spot", "Tar Pit", and "16th Chamber ODB Special". That last track features some previously unreleased ODB verses, which is nice to hear. The fact that there wasn't more of his material worked into the album may unfortunately signify there is not a great wealth of reserve material to draw from.

Outside of the 8 Diagrams, I recently found Wu-Tang's official site. There is a media tab that has a pretty staggering collection of free MP3s, mostly B-sides, rarities, live tracks, and the such. Top picks would be the original Wu Demo Tape (which makes it even more baffling they ever made it big) and a a few live cuts from Cilvaringz. This was my first exposure to Cilvaringz, and I was pretty floored by his biting, politically charged lyrics that pull no punches.

One of the most appealing parts of Wu-Tang's music is the mythos that builds itself in samples and alliases and stories and anachronisms. Wu has built an entire universe in small bits, that over lap and build upon each other. This is the same thing that appeals to me about the larger Grant Morrison picture. Every thread left unexplored in one story eventually is picked up in another. A good example of this is how his New X Men story "Assault on Weapon Plus" left a lot of room to play around in the early weapon projects, of which the early ones were said to be performed on animals. After leaving Marvel, he and Quitely did a Vertigo mini-series called WE3. Short for Weapon 3, this series focused on a group of animal experiments conducted by the US military.

The ultimate manifestation of this impulse for Morrison seems to be his series 7 Soldiers of Victory.

It's almost misleading to call 7 Soldiers a series in and of itself. It is a #0 issue and a#1 issue with 7 mini-series in between. It would be fool hardy to try to analyze the series in full in this space. You could look at the Wikipedia, or here, or here, or, well point being there is plenty of coverage out there. What I'd like to point out is how Wu-Tangian the whole venture is.

Most apparent is the discord of art. 8 different artists worked on this series (1 for each mini and another for the bookends) and the visual styles they bring are very different. Klarion, the Witch Boy is painted by Frazer Irving in a pallet that rarely leaves icy blues and pinks, save for Klarion's fiery familiar, Teekl. Frankenstein is illustrated by Doug Mahnke, whose art is tangibly gritty, as if only recently dug up. Stack on top of this Simone Bianchi, Cameron Stewart, Ryan Sook, J.H. Williams III, and a half dozen others and you have what would be for any thing else total chaos. Wu-Tang is fairly similar in it's spread of MCs.

Besides the art, there is a mash up of themes as well. Just as the Wu-Tang Clan blends classic Kung Fu mythology, Samurai action, post-apocalyptic nightmares, super-heroes, politics, Muslim issues, alongside a smattering of more standard rap fare; Morrison brings together a story from a "proto-Camelot", a lost puritan witch village, urban pirates, science, mad-science, Buddhism, stage magic, arcane magic, super-heroes, classic monster movies, past, present, future, and everything in between. The story is everywhere, almost to where you might not believe that it could reconcile with itself.

Yet that is the beauty of both the Wu-Tang Clan and 7 Soldiers. It finds a way. All of the insanity coalesces into one thing. Themes and images are repeated until they just make sense. a puritan village would seem to have very little to do with New York's subways and their pirates but they cross paths until there is no other way. The number 7 is repeated so many times that it unifies the story, forcing an acceptance of the implicit numerology. Similarly Wu-Tang have solidified their fusing of archaic eastern martial arts with modern urban life styles that it seems natural now. To draw another comparison, its like a Tarantino movie. Insane in its mash up of influences and styles and music, yet it draws together in an undeniable way. This is the appeal of 7 soldiers, and of the larger Morrison story.

OMG Another Test Post!!!!
Here is an amazing video to go with it.

Sarah Brightman and Hot Gossip: Starship Trooper

I'm gonna remix the crap outta that...

EDIT: COMMENTS ARE FINALLY WORKING. I read this issue that I had been saving for a while in response to the craving i got to read a real Silver Surfer story after seeing Fantastic Four 2. This comic from February of 1988 was written by Steve Englehart, penciled and colored by Marshall Rogers, and inked by Joe Rubinstein. Englehart and Rogers are famous for a pretty long run on the batman books that include the masterful "Joker Fish" story. Anyhow, these guys aren't pulling any punches in this story, which is an insane head trip from page 1:

Surfer lounges at home reading the paper and asks Shalla-Bal where his pipe and slippers are. She thinks they might be under the rat. The silver rat in the corner there. We find out over the next few pages that she was right and he proceeds to smoke his teeny tiny slippers and sit in his giant pipe. You'll notice Shalla in a stylish FF outfit here (is Norrin secretly into Sue? Johnny?) but on the next page she is wearing her traditional outfit, then Mantis' costume, then she is Mantis, and then some Kree bust in his door and tell him they don't like the way he thinks! The nerve. Good thing the silver rat saves his butt at this point, and surfer escapes. He is pursued by some Kree with very stylish facial hair.

Good thing for our hero, he knows who he is...

He's a naked dude riding a silver dog. From here, we watch the former herald become increasingly self-aware, until he realizes that he is unconscious and being experimented on by the Kree and the Supreme Intelligence , who is manifesting in the Surfer's mind as the octo-dragon thingy. This issue clearly has some build up from previous issues, and has a interspersed tertiary plot about Shalla-Bal, but it still works completely on its own. In the climax, SS summons his board from his unconscious state, awakens, surfs through the Supreme Intelligence , and snatches the soul gem on the way. w00000000000!!!!! This is something you would enjoy if you like Seth Fisher. 10/10!

From Silver to "Golden", High Places have recently released a new song on their MySpace Page. "Golden" is a great track that is distinctly High Places, while bringing something distinctly new to the table. It seems maybe 'dancier' despite having a less formal beat and less distinguishable lyrics than previous releases. best of all this is a song from an upcoming full length release. Yay! I like this song a bunch. And it's free.

In other High Places news, they were featured in the last ever issue of Punk Planet magazine, and they have a 7" coming out as a joint release by CAFF/FLICK and Reverse Retro (who were also in that same issue of Punk Planet). I've heard the tracks and they are both great. Band of the future, Today!

And then there was Smashing Pumpkins come back album "Zeitgeist". I don't want to dwell to much on this, because really, it sucks. Maybe more accurately, it's boring. What was so bold and awesome 10-15 years ago is now so stale and safe. Hard rock is the new adult-contemporary. I do like some of the tracks. The stand outs are Doomsday Clock, 7 Shades of Black, and Tarantula. On a proper Pumpkins album, these tracks would be filler, but the entire album is so homogeneous you could only have at most two of these in a good mix. This album is for your uncle who likes to listen to rock and roll in a completely safe way, and pretend he's rockin' out while he flips burgers. There is just no life in it.

I got the chance to see Del tha funkee homosapien this past week. I had a bunch of fun, but I'd say I was a little let down by Del's set. This is due probably to nothing other than my own unrealistically high expectations. I saw lots of people there, including Van Sanders, who is the first person to introduce me to Del about 10 years ago. Pretty much every cool person over 21 (and a few under) was there. Tons of fun. Thanks goes to Heather.

I'd like to talk about a lot more, but I'm outta time. Blogging is hard, and I'm sorry if I have ever been upset with anyone for not getting one out on time. Thanks for reading, leave me a comment if I figure out how to enable that.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://effetebomb.blogspot.com/2007/07/to-me-my-bird-golden-silver-etc.html' title='TO ME, MY BIRD! I'm going to focus on two subjects, music (mostly of the underground or Alaskan varieties) and comics (mostly of every variety). I'm really interested in both, so you probably are too, right? Maybe I'll come up with a two font color system so you can skip the stuff you don't care about. I'm 22, married, parent of a 3 year old boy and a 2 week old boy. I'm in 2 active bands, 4 that will probably never perform or play together again, and I've got a project in mind to hopefully be ready in the next few months.

TEST YOUR MIGHT!!!!!

I guess I'll try a real first post to compliment that introductory stuff. Lets choose our font colours:

comics music
comics music
comics music
comics music
comics music
comics music
comics music

comics music looks pretty good to me. Open to opinions.

I guess I'll start with comics today. Today I bought All-Star Superman #8 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. Totally awesome. Unrelentingly. My favorite part was the bizarro national anthem, as sung by Le-Roj!!!

"NO SAY, AM NO SEE BY AM NIGHT'S EARLY DARK! HOW SHAMEFULLY QUIET BY AM MORNING'S FIRST FADING! THIN STRIPES AND DULL STARS THROUGH THE COMFORTABLE PEACE, UNDER TRENCHES NO WATCH, AM SO CRAVENLY HANGING! BY NO ROCKET'S BLUE SHADE AM NO SHELLS DEAD DOWN THERE, GAVE NO PROOF ALL DAY LONG THAT THE FLAG WAS UNWHERE! NO SAY DOES AM SPAR-STRANGLED SHROUD HANG LIMPLY! UNDER LAND OF NO FREE! AM US HOME COWARDLEEEE!"

In a comic released in America on the 4th of July. Probably not an accident. Just sayin', it am make me unproud. And who doesn't love the bizarro-justice leaguers??? Probably nobody. There's also this nice scene where Supes is trying to get help and Bizarro leads the other bizarros in mocking him.

All in all, a great issue. Not the best in the series, but still solidly atop the piles that are rolling out of DC

In the world of music, I'll take a little narcissistic bent. Tony, of my favorite local promotions/record label Reverse Retro, put up the end of my first set as DJSNESDS. In this project I use Super Nintendos as turntables, switching out cartriges of Mario Paint and various other games. I use my Nintendo DS and Electroplankton to overlay more music. This video is hitting at the end of my set, where Electroplankton is distorting a sampled scream. I'll be doing this again soon.

At the very end you can catch a little of the last Mario Paint beat I made, "I Love Sarah A." The song is named after the saved picture that was on the used cartridge when i bought it, but one of the two members of the Lucky Dragons (whom I was opening for) is named Sarah Anderson. Fun people, fun show.

Also, The Moon Knights (a band I drum for) is featred on the Dresden Dolls MySpace Page. We are performing a cover of their song Delilah, and they apparently liked it. You can see me watching 28 days later at this New Year's Eve party, waiting for my cue. Thanks Dresden Dolls!!!

FINISH HIM!!!!

Next time on The Effete Bomb, Silver Surfer #8 (1988), Smashing Pumpkins-"Zeitgeist", High Places-"Golden", and probably more. Thanks for bearing with me through my first blog post. Also, if you live in Anchorage, I'll hopefully see you at Del tha Funky Homosapien this Friday, July 13th @ 9PM.
